The game’s sound effects, tones and tunes taken from the popular TV game show are just one of the reasons why IGT’s most popular slot machine has been around for 25 years.

Starting June 15 and running through December 1, the company is celebrating the brand’s silver anniversary, 25 Weeks of Fortune, with special giveaways via the Wheel Facebook page.

IGT says Wheel of Fortune marked the first licensed slot machine brand and pioneered many themed games featuring prominent movies, TV shows and celebrities.

And while Wheel of Fortune makes a big visual impact on the casino floor with 250 different game options — some in cabinets more than 11 feet tall — it’s the sounds that keep fans coming back.

“You can’t walk a casino floor without hearing it,” said Boris Hallerbach, IGT’s director of product management for premium products in Reno. “It’s as if the games are calling out to the players.”

Plaza CEO Jonathan Jossel shares the same impression. The downtown property has the Wheel of Fortune Slots Zone, where different variants of the machine are brought together.

“It’s remarkable,” Jossel said. “It’s the sound of the game, everyone knows the sounds of the Wheel of Fortune game, whether you hear it at the airport or in the casino. It’s the first sound you hear when you arrive in Las Vegas and the last sound you hear when you leave. It’s almost synonymous with Vegas, that Wheel of Fortune song and the sound of those wheels.”

According to Hallerbach, it started when former IGT chairman Charles Matthews attended an awards ceremony and by “a happy accident” sat next to a Sony Pictures Television executive. Over lunch, they chatted about the team’s potential to develop a slot machine game show collaboration.

“It was a little difficult for an entertainment and television company to review their content on gaming machines,” Hallerbach said. “The sensitivity of how we represent the slot game and the experience was important, and we wanted to break away from the TV show and the slot machine a bit.”

Although 1996 is considered the year of the birth of Wheel of Fortune, a decade ago a significant development occurred that would create much of the Wheel’s success.

IGT has introduced wide-area progressive jackpots that combine machines from a wide area that feed money into a prize pool. IGT introduced the concept with Megabucks, another king of the slot floor.

Ten years later, Wheel of Fortune would adopt a progressive system that spanned a wide area, ensuring that some of the game’s biggest winners would become millionaires.

The earliest Wheel of Fortune game that came out didn’t even have a wheel. It was simply a three-reel mechanical nickel slot game with a game show theme.

Around that time, a small Las Vegas company, Anchor Gaming, had a patented wheel that was perfectly suited for inclusion in the Wheel of Fortune game. Anchor developed slot games, including Wheel of Gold, and operated casinos in Cripple Creek and Black Hawk, Colorado, and a tribal casino in California. But his greatest contribution to the industry was providing the wheel that made Wheel of Fortune famous.

IGT originally leased the rights to use the wheel. But in 2001, IGT became a dominant international presence and acquired Anchor in a one-stock deal for $1.1 billion, making it Nevada’s largest publicly traded company at the time.

“We leveraged Anchor’s wheel in the process and created something that combines the Wheel of Fortune brand with strong IGT core games like Double Diamond and creates a really positive vibe with players,” Hallerbach said. “It was the first brand in slots, and people who were exposed to the show on TV every night, I think, had an immediate affinity for the Wheel of Fortune slot game.”

With the popularity of the Wheel slot and the rise of the TV show, IGT’s network of studios began inventing variations of the game that were as popular as the original versions. IGT introduced a video version of the Wheel in 2001.

As technology improved, IGT added more paylines and shuffled in more denominations for the game, attracting a wider audience for the game.

In 2006, IGT introduced the Wheel of Fortune Super Spin to attract more people to the game’s bonus features faster. In 2009, thanks to those wide-ranging progressive jackpots, the Wheel delivered the biggest jackpot of all time, $14.4 million, to a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Cabinets and displays for the game have grown. Some versions had seats for more than one player. Graphics became sharper and more realistic.

When IGT first introduced True 3D display products in 2016, the TV show’s Vanna White met and photographed attendees at that year’s Global Gaming Expo trade show in Las Vegas. He received the ceremonial key to the city of Las Vegas as part of the celebration.

In 2017, IGT followed up with the Wheel of Fortune MegaTower, which was just over 11 feet tall, and in 2018, the company introduced True 4D, a new visual element of the game, in which game elements appear to jump off the video screen and into
