The ‘Queen of the Nile’ poker machine first appeared in 1998, more than twenty years after the introduction of electronic poker machines in the 1970s. Notes This engine was designed, built and reconditioned by Aristocrat Technologies at its Waterloo factory between 1997 and 2006.
NotiAristocrat was founded in 1953, when Len Ainsworth began repairing and making poker machines in his family’s dental supply factory. At this time playing poker machines was illegal in NSW, but the law was so broken that a poker machine manufacturing industry already existed in Sydney. In addition, many machines were imported from the United States. Poker machines were legalized in registered clubs in 1956, and in the following two decades Aristocrat became the leading Australian manufacturer, forcing many competitors out of the industry, notably the machine manufacturer Nutt & Muddle Popular jubilee. The methods used by Aristocrat to gain market dominance attracted the attention of the police and regulatory authorities; Ainsworth is still involved in litigation arising from the resulting prosecutions. However there is no doubt that Aristocrat’s success was also based on several innovations in poker machine design. Although Aristocrat machines were initially copies of US models, by the 1960s Aristocrat was exporting to US casinos. During the 1990s its video poker machines became major competitors with US manufacturers, and Aristocrat now manufactures and sells machines in the US, England, South Africa and 55 other countries. It is the second largest manufacturer in the world, after the American company IGT. Len Ainsworth severed ties with Aristocrat in 1996, and founded a new company Ainsworth Game Technology.
