The sight and sound of winning at a slot machine can increase your desire to play and increase your memory of winning big, according to new research from Alberta scientists.

Sound Of Slotmachine In Sound Effects

The study, led by Professor Marcia Specht in the Department of Psychology, found that people prefer to play on virtual slot machines that provide casino-related cues, such as the sound of coins dropping or the symbol of a dollar sign.

“These results show that cues related to money or winning can make slot machines more attractive and make big wins more memorable,” Specht said. Such indicators are prevalent in casinos and potentially attract slot machine gambling. “

The researchers also found that people preferred to play machines with these cues regardless of how dangerous the machine was and whether the sounds or visual effects were ever present. Co-author Christopher Madan, a former PhD student at the University of Nottingham in the UK, explained that attraction to slot machines and memories for winning can be influenced by factors other than the amount of money won at a slot machine. People should be aware that their feelings of attraction and winning may be biased.

According to the Canadian Gaming Association, 98% of Canadians gamble for fun and recreation. Alberta has 28 casinos and over 14,000 slot machines. In 2019, the revenue generated by the gaming industry in Alberta was $2.7 billion. Lucky Sevens Jumbo Slot Machine Casino Toy Piggy Bank Replica With Flashing Lights And Jackpot Sounds

The research was conducted in collaboration with Elliott Ludwig of the University of Warwick, UK, and Yang Liu, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry, University of Alberta. Funding for this research was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI).

The paper, “Effects of Winning and Relative Payouts on Choice Between Simulated Slot Machines,” was published in Addiction (doi:10.1111/add.15010).
