We’ve seen college football teams showcase their unique way of celebrating a touchdown or forcing a turnover. From Miami’s turnover chain to Boise State’s turnover throne, there were plenty of creative ways for teams to celebrate.

In Saturday’s game against the Utah State Utes, Charles Williams ran 75 yards for a touchdown to give the Rebels a 10-7 lead. Following the score, UNLV showed off its new sideline slot machine, “The Rebel Roller,” to celebrate.

As mentioned on the CBS Sports broadcast, the team unveiled a giant slot machine for this game. Anyone who scores a touchdown or forces a turnover will receive the honor of being promoted to the slot machine level. Williams is the first UNLV player to do so.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, the celebration didn’t carry over into the postgame. UNLV held a 24-21 lead, but Elelyon Noah ran in an 11-yard touchdown run with just over 30 seconds left in regulation, giving Utah State a 28-24 victory.

Sure, the slot was nice, but you have to believe they’d love to celebrate with it after getting their first win of the season.

UNLV is coming off a tough streak this season, starting the year 0-5 overall and 0-1 in Mountain West action. But the Rebels scored 17 points in the first quarter against Utah State and now lead 24-21 in the 3rd quarter. That’s what spends a lot of time on the machine.

About the Saturday Tradition | Ethics and Editorial Rules | Privacy policy | Terms and Conditions | Do not sell my personal information Running back Charles Williams scored a 75-yard touchdown run to give UNLV a 10-7 lead early in the first quarter, but his run wasn’t over. He knew what came next. History was about to be made.

He sprinted to the side. His teammates knew what was coming and rallied around the side-back lane they created for Williams. He made his way through his teammates and grabbed the right lever and pulled, a rite of passage for some in Sin City.

The front screens rose like a fountain and celebrated with a graphic of dollar bills blowing like leaves blown from a tree by the autumn wind.

Every pull of this lever is a winner. But building a slot machine that never loses is harder than it sounds.

Billing props have been all the rage in college football since Miami debuted the Faculty Chain in 2017. That produced plenty of copycats, but Rebels coach Marcus Arroyo wanted something on the energy side and wrestled with his staff over the idea.

Could the team have a big pair of dice to roll on the side? What about a money cannon that shoots money into the sky after any big game? But the coaches wanted something that more closely embodied the program’s identity and landed on a machine.

“We wanted to be creative and eye-catching, because that’s what Las Vegas is all about,” said Shelby McIntyre, UNLV’s director of strategy and director of recruiting. “It’s Vegas-y and probably not something any other school could ever have.”

But taking it from an idea to reality was more difficult than McIntyre and Rebels realized. And the price was higher.

Aztecs Push Their Luck Into Las Vegas; But Is The Rebels Win Streak Real Or A Mirage?

“It’s not like you can buy a machine on eBay and take it to the games with you,” McIntyre said.

He called Joe Haro, a former UNLV football player and board member of the UNLV Football Foundation, who in June connected him with some executives from International Game Technology (IGT), headquartered in Reno, where the Nevada campus is located. He presented the idea and asked them what they could do.

“I basically told them, ‘I think this is going to go viral.’ I’ve never seen anything like that on the sidelines,’ so I think they were excited at first,” McIntyre said.

IGT liked the idea of creating a slot machine and agreed to sponsor the project and provide a new trademark on the side, featuring the IGT logo on the front.

“I wanted him to win every tour, though, because if he doesn’t win, you know, it’s not so cool,” McIntyre said with a laugh.

IGT, for obvious reasons, never created a slot machine that won on every spin. Doing so required the mathematicians on staff to come up with an equation that crowned the winner each time the lever was pulled. This delayed the process and is part of the reason the slot machine did not debut until Saturday, week 7.

UNLV’s graphics team, led by Ethan McCoy, created all the custom graphics and reels for the IGT installation on the slot machine. There were meetings as the slot machine was being designed, but it was premature that it would not be ready by week 1.

The Unlv Slot Machine Is The Best Sideline Celebration Since Miami’s Turnover Chain

“It takes time to build a fully custom slot machine, as you can probably imagine,” McIntyre said.

The project was kept under wraps, and Arroyo unveiled the new side prop to his team on Friday morning to rave reviews. He explained what it was, how it worked and when to pull the lever.

The machine neither takes nor gives out any money, but the machine’s sound is fed into the stadium public address system at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas so players and coaches can hear it when the Rebels play home games. The machine congratulates the winners.

Williams’ first pull may have been a tough one, so UNLV players may choose to use the fully functional button on the front of the machine more often to initiate the spin, but what prompts a spin is still being debated within the program.

The slot machine is not a billing prop, but a prop to be used for “momentum” games. What this means is subject to interpretation. Williams’ 75-yard run to regain the lead definitely qualified, as did the balance. But making tackles or breaking up passes on fourth downs would also force a turnover on downs.

“As we go into the season, we can hit on exactly how we want to use him, and we’ll have a better idea, but right now it’s touchdowns, turnovers and stopping them on fourth down,” McIntyre said.

In all, UNLV players turned it over eight or nine times in Saturday’s loss to Utah State, dropping to 0-6 on the season. The players weren’t sure when the machine would be used, and the fans weren’t prepared for the sideline display during Saturday’s game. Part of UNLV’s job is to let the sideline and the stands know when a slot machine celebration is imminent.

Fans weren’t sure what to expect, and building anticipation inside the stadium, like Miami does with the Turnover Chain, is part of the goal.
